$4,500 a Pound for Boquete Coffee? Yes…. Really …

$4,500 per pound. That’s a lot for one single pound of coffee.

The record breaking coffee is from the Lamastus family based in Alto Quiel, Boquete, Panama. Boquete and Volcan coffee consistently break international price records. Many consider specialty coffee from the highlands in Chiriqui to be the very best in the world.

A recent article from Bloomberg Línea takes us deep into the captivating world of specialty coffee, highlighting an extraordinary milestone for Panama’s renowned geisha coffee. Celebrated for its unique flavor and rarity, geisha coffee has set a new record, selling for an astounding $10,000 per kilogram at the Best of Panama (BoP) 2024 auction. This landmark sale saw Saza Coffee, a Japanese roaster, purchase 20 kilograms from the Lamastus family’s Elida Estate for over $200,000.

The journey of geisha coffee, from its origins in Ethiopia in the 1930s to its cultivation in the lush, high-altitude fields of Boquete, Panama, tells a story of passion, dedication, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. This Bloomberg Línea piece offers a closer look at how geisha coffee continues to command the world’s attention, securing its place as an icon in the coffee industry.
