Volcan

Volcan
Tierras Altas, Chiriqui

Welcome to Volcan in Tierras Altas, a stunning area located in the highlands of Western Panama.

Volcan, is a small mountain town popular with expatriates and Panamanians alike located at the base of the famous Volcan Baru, Panama's highest peak.  Volcan has postcard-worthy views of Volcan Bau and its lush green surroundings.   Volcan is a thriving agricultural community with a lovely town center.  The region is abundant with fresh produce, so you’ll never be short of natural and healthy food. And it’s less than an hour’s drive from the city of La Concepcion and just a bit further to the bigger city of David.

Volcan is in the process of a renaissance.  The town was chosen as a select Panama location to receive extensive new development funds.  Thus, the main road is enjoying major improvements including new sidewalks, a bike path, more parking, green areas with ornamental flowers and trees and lantern style-lighting.  The central park is also being transformed into a spectacular new town center.   Volcan, already a gem, is becoming an even brighter jewel.

Our excitement about what’s happening in Volcan was so great, that we decided to have a new Casa Solution office there which recently opened in the end of 2022.

With spring-like weather all year, Volcan is situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters (4,617 feet).  It is the most active community in Tierras Altas with the most services, stores, and amenities.  The entire Tierras Altas region serves, along with other areas of Chiriqui, as the breadbasket of Panama. Volcan is well-connected to neighboring farming communities such as Cerro Punta, Plaza de Caisan, La Concepcion, and Rio Sereno on the Costa Rican border.

The travel time between Boquete and Volcan along with the rest of Tierras Altas was recently shortened by the completion of the Ruta Sur road, an impressive public works project.  The route from the Casa Solution office in downtown Boquete to the Casa Solution office in downtown Volcan now takes only about an hour and a half; perhaps a bit more if you stop or slow down to take in the beautiful scenery.

The fertile lands surrounding Volcan are used to grow a variety of crops, including onions, tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, coffee, corn, bananas, potatoes, lettuce, and flowers. Along with large dairy, horse, and cattle farms, there are several smaller sheep, pig, and chicken farms scattered throughout the region. A couple of miles north of Volcan, on the road to Cerro Punta, there is a large trout farm. To support the farming community, the region has a sizeable Catholic High School, San Benito, that is dedicated to improving farming methods throughout Panama.

Volcan, already a popular expat and tourist center, is poised to become the next Boquete, with comparably beautiful scenery—misty hillsides dense with greenery, high altitude homes for sale, gardens, and abundant wildflowers.  It's a wonderful place for those looking for an authentic and down-to-earth community.

The cost of living in Volcan is considered very affordable with rentals, real estate prices for houses and lots, food and restaurants being a bit more affordable than in world-famous Boquete right on the other side the mountain.

The Volcan and Tierras Altas area is made up of a friendly population of Panamanians and expats who support one another, offering a relaxed and healthy lifestyle with fresh food, spectacular scenery, good amenities, and a low cost of living.

One of the advantages that Volcan offers to new foreign residents is that there is a small immigration checkpoint at the border between Panama and Costa Rica in Rio Sereno, a mountain town that is 1 hour and 30 minutes away by car. This border is not crowded as the one  in Paso Canoas to the South sometimes is, which makes entering and leaving the country easier for anyone who needs to stamp their passport and spend a few days out of the country.

Some of the notable places to enjoy in Volcan and nearby include:

The Lagoons of Volcano are the natural bodies of freshwater that we find at the highest altitude in Panamanian territory. They are the habitat of a great variety of birds and a favorite resting place of migratory birds from North to South America and vice versa.  They help make Volcan a bird watching mecca.

Cerro Punta is the second highest peak in Panama, surpassed in altitude only by Volcan Barú. It is located in an area where soils are cultivated with a great variety of vegetables. The way the mountain slopes look gives the rural towns in the area a Swiss-like appearance.

Haras Cerro Punta is one of the best thoroughbred horse breeding farms in Latin America. Their specimens have won several international races. The home of these majestic animals is a very green meadow that sits atop the valley created by the mountains and is bordered by the waters of the river. A small tourist village called Guadalupe by Haras Cerro Punta.

The Llano is a pretty place in the area that turns into a large golden grass field with pine trees from which one can take in the full splendor of the nearby mountains and towering Volcan Baru.

Tizingal mountain hot springs, open to the public provide a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the tropical setting.

Finca Dracula, a reservation only, botanical garden with a wide variety of orchids is a popular place to visit.

The Chiriqui Viejo River is one of the longest rivers in the province of Chiriqui. It originates in the rainforest within the protected areas of the La Amistad International Park near Volcan and runs through four of the five corregimientos that make up the Tierras Altas district. Its waters are used downstream for level 4 river rafting. It flows into the Pacific Ocean coast in the district of Barú.

These are just a few of the wonderful places in the Volcan area residents can enjoy when living in Volcan, Panama.
