Panama’s Film Industry Generates $22.8 Million in 2024, Aims for Further Growth

Panama’s film industry is experiencing significant momentum, with the country positioning itself as an emerging hub for international productions. According to Minister of Commerce and Industry Julio Moltó, film and series productions generated an impressive $22.8 million in revenue during 2024.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The flourishing film sector created 2,106 direct jobs last year, demonstrating its potential as an economic driver. “Panama offers a 25% cash rebate incentive to companies filming here,” Minister Moltó explained, highlighting one of the country’s competitive advantages in attracting international productions.

“This same industry generates $300 million annually in countries like the Dominican Republic. Panama has everything necessary to achieve something similar because incredible projects have already been filmed here,” Moltó added.

Notable Productions

Several significant productions chose Panama as their filming location in 2024, including:

  • “Coolie,” an American film with a $2.3 million investment, filmed in Capira (Panama West), Portobelo in Colon province, and Casco Antiguo in Panama City
  • Season two of “Dondi,” which invested $7 million and created 259 local jobs
  • Reality shows including “Greenlight” with Mr. Beast, Amazon, and “Deadly,” along with “Contest,” which collectively invested $8.1 million and generated approximately 360 jobs

Between August and December 2024 alone, Panama hosted 13 film productions from Canada, the United States, France, and local filmmakers.

Panama’s Competitive Advantages

What makes Panama attractive to international productions? The Ministry of Commerce and Industry points to several key factors: strategic locations, climate variety, streamlined permitting processes, and the logistical support provided by the Panama Film Commission.

The Film Commission has also supported the development of local productions, such as “Despierta Mamá,” which received Oscar nominations and secured distribution throughout Latin American cinemas.

Real Estate Implications for Film Industry Growth

The expansion of Panama’s film industry creates exciting opportunities for real estate investors, particularly in areas frequently used as filming locations. Properties in historic Casco Viejo and scenic coastal regions may see increased demand for short-term rentals during production periods.

Investment in production-friendly properties could yield strong returns as Panama continues to position itself as a filming destination. Areas with diverse landscapes and architectural styles are particularly valuable to production companies seeking versatile filming locations.

The industry’s growth may also drive development of specialized real estate, such as production facilities, studios, and accommodation specifically designed for film crews – creating new niches in the property market.

Looking Forward

In February 2025, the Panama Film Commission launched the “Welcome to Panama” campaign to promote the country as a premier destination for international filmmakers. The promotional video showcases Panama’s diverse locations, ethnicities, and cultures while emphasizing the country’s ownership of the Panama Canal.

Notable films partially shot in Panama include “Suicide Squad” (2021), “007 Quantum of Solace,” “Hands of Stone” (about Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán), season four of “La Casa de Panama,” “Contraband,” “Escobar: Paradise Lost,” “Basic,” “The Tailor of Panama,” and “Herbie Goes Bananas.”
