Panama recorded more than $5.2 million in audiovisual investment during the first quarter of 2026, supported by 17 productions and growing international participation, according to official data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI).
This early-year performance reflects continued interest from global production companies and highlights Panama’s positioning as a competitive filming destination in the region.
Growth in Productions and International Interest
Between January and March 2026, the country hosted 17 audiovisual projects, up from 14 during the same period in 2025. This represents a 21.4% increase in production activity, alongside a 116.4% rise in estimated investment.
The projects span a wide range of formats including documentaries, digital content, television productions, films, and commercial shoots. The diversity of content signals a broader appeal beyond traditional cinema.
International participation remains strong, led by the United States, followed by Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Dominican Republic. These markets continue to select Panama for its locations, logistical advantages, and incentive programs.
Job Creation and Local Economic Impact
The industry’s growth is also translating into employment. More than 760 jobs have been generated so far in 2026, compared to 281 during the same period last year.
Most of these roles are filled by local workers, reinforcing the sector’s contribution to Panama’s domestic economy. Increased production activity typically benefits multiple industries, including transportation, hospitality, catering, and technical services.
Government officials highlighted that the expansion of the audiovisual sector supports both investment inflows and workforce development, while also promoting the country internationally.
Panama Strengthens Its Film Hub Strategy
During the launch of the International Film Festival of Panama (IFF) 2026, government representatives reiterated their focus on building a competitive film hub.
Efforts include attracting foreign productions, simplifying investment processes, and promoting Panama’s logistical advantages such as connectivity, diverse landscapes, and established service providers.
The Panama Film Commission continues to play a central role in coordinating these efforts and positioning the country as a reliable destination for international shoots.
The IFF 2026, scheduled from April 9 to April 12, will feature more than 40 films and take place across venues such as Ciudad del Saber, Ciudad de las Artes, and the Biomuseo.
What This Means for Real Estate and Local Markets
While this is not a real estate-driven story, the implications are worth noting.
Increased film activity tends to concentrate in well-connected and visually attractive areas. This can indirectly boost short-term rental demand, hospitality services, and property visibility in certain regions.
Areas like Panama City and lifestyle destinations such as the Azuero Peninsula already benefit from tourism and international exposure. Continued filming activity can reinforce that trend by showcasing these locations globally.
However, it is important to stay grounded. Film-related demand is often temporary and project-based. It can create short bursts of economic activity rather than long-term structural shifts in property values.
That said, for investors focused on short-term rentals or hospitality-driven properties, this type of growth adds another layer of demand worth tracking.
A Sector to Watch Moving Forward
Panama’s audiovisual industry is still developing, but the current trajectory suggests increasing momentum. The combination of rising investment, international participation, and job creation points to a sector gaining traction.
For expats, investors, and residents, this reinforces Panama’s broader appeal as a country attracting diverse industries beyond traditional sectors.
