Bocas del Toro Continues to Shine as Tourism Growth Brings New Attention to Panama’s Caribbean Paradise

Bocas del Toro, Panama

Bocas del Toro is attracting renewed international attention as Panama’s tourism industry continues its strong performance in 2026. Located on the country’s Caribbean coast, the province’s archipelago of nine main islands and more than 50 smaller cays has become one of Panama’s most recognizable leisure destinations, appealing to travelers looking for beaches, marine wildlife, surfing, and a relaxed island lifestyle.

The growing interest in Bocas comes at a time when Panama is recording one of its strongest tourism recoveries in recent years. According to the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP), the country welcomed nearly one million international visitors during the first quarter of 2026, representing a 17.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Much of that momentum is helping destinations beyond Panama City receive greater international exposure.

Tourism Is Expanding Beyond Panama City

One of the biggest contributors has been Copa Airlines’ Panama Stopover program, which allows international passengers to spend several days in Panama without paying additional airfare.

The program welcomed more than 132,000 visitors during the first half of 2026, a 38% increase over the previous year. Many of these travelers are choosing to extend their stay by visiting destinations such as Bocas del Toro, giving the islands additional visibility among North American and European visitors.

For many travelers, Bocas offers something very different from the country’s business capital. Instead of skyscrapers and highways, visitors find colorful Caribbean towns built over the water, quiet beaches, coral reefs, mangrove forests, and some of Panama’s richest marine ecosystems.

Why Visitors Keep Coming Back

Bocas del Toro has built its reputation around experiences rather than large-scale resorts.

Popular attractions include snorkeling around Cayo Zapatilla, dolphin watching in Dolphin Bay, surfing at Playa Bluff, and exploring the protected ecosystems of Bastimentos Island National Marine Park. The province is also well known for its Afro-Caribbean culture, fresh seafood, local chocolate farms, and vibrant waterfront restaurants.

Unlike many Caribbean destinations dominated by all-inclusive developments, much of Bocas continues to be driven by boutique hotels, eco-lodges, vacation rentals, and locally owned businesses. That gives the destination a character that many repeat visitors appreciate.

The area also benefits from warm tropical temperatures throughout the year, allowing tourism activity to remain relatively consistent outside of the traditional peak season.

Infrastructure Investment Signals Long-Term Confidence

Tourism growth is also being supported by public investment.

The Panamanian government recently announced plans for approximately US$20 million in upgrades to Isla Colón International Airport. The project includes runway improvements, a larger passenger terminal, expanded aircraft parking areas, and modernized airport facilities.

While these improvements are designed primarily to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency, they also demonstrate long-term confidence in Bocas del Toro as one of Panama’s strategic tourism destinations.

Better transportation infrastructure generally makes destinations more accessible, benefiting both visitors and local businesses over time.

What This Could Mean for the Property Market

Tourism and real estate often develop side by side, particularly in destinations where visitors return repeatedly.

Bocas del Toro has historically attracted buyers who first discovered the islands during a vacation before eventually purchasing a vacation home, retirement property, or investment rental.

The market offers a wide variety of opportunities, from waterfront homes and island condos to jungle retreats and development land throughout the province. As international awareness of Bocas continues to grow, demand for well-located properties may continue to benefit from the area’s increasing visibility.

Of course, tourism growth alone does not guarantee rising property values. Buyers should continue evaluating properties based on location, accessibility, rental potential, infrastructure, and long-term ownership goals. However, sustained visitor growth combined with ongoing infrastructure investment creates encouraging fundamentals for the market.
